Reading an ingredient list: the first five lines rule

An ingredient list looks like a cipher, but you do not need to read all of it. Ingredients are listed by decreasing amount, so almost everything that matters fits into the first five lines.

The first five lines rule

The first five ingredients make up the bulk of the bottle. After them come those usually present at under one percent — and that is where the ingredient from the marketing label often turns out to be.

How a typical bottle is divided up
First 5 lines — base and humectants Actives Texture, preservatives, fragrance
Water, glycerin and oils are the base, and they decide how the product feels on the skin.

An ingredient listed after the preservatives and fragrance is almost certainly there in trace amounts — it is on the label for the word on the box.

What usually sits at the top

  • Aqua / Water — water, the base of nearly every product.
  • Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Propanediol — they pull water in and hold it in the skin.
  • Oils and emollients (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Squalane) — they soften and stop water evaporating.
  • Plant extracts: when an extract comes first instead of water, the product is built around it.

Where to look for actives

Actives work at very different concentrations, so "higher is better" is a simplification. The rule of thumb is simpler: an active should at least come before the preservatives.

  • Niacinamide works from 2%, serums often carry 5–10% — then it is in the top five.
  • Vitamin C as Ascorbic Acid is usually 10–20% and also sits high.
  • Peptides and retinol work at fractions of a percent — they belong in the middle of the list.
  • In good products centella and propolis come first, in place of water.

What sensitive skin should watch for

  • Parfum / Fragrance and essential oils — a common cause of redness; the higher up, the more noticeable.
  • Alcohol Denat. near the top is drying; Cetyl and Stearyl Alcohol are the opposite — they soften, and are different substances entirely.
  • Menthol, mint and eucalyptus feel refreshing but irritate a damaged barrier.

For almost every product we sell the full ingredient list is on its page — you can read it before buying instead of squinting at the box.

You do not need to read the whole list. Check the first five lines, find the actives, and make sure nothing your skin has reacted to before sits high up.
